This is none other than Seraya Shapshal, the leader of the Karaites. A most unfairly maligned personality from the Shoah years, he, in fact, saved the lives of Rabbanite Jews.
He was also respected by Rabbanite Jews who learned secular studies under him back in Vilna. A letter in his archive contains correspondence with Rabbanite Jews who even referred to him as "mori verabbi", literally my teacher and rabbi.
