Greek Romaniote Jews in NY ; a visit to a rare Jewish community
My mother had a Greek maiden name, Lapides, although her parents and grandparents came from Russia.
I'd like to know if anyone knows why Jews would leave sunny Greece to go to Russia and when that might have been. It has always fascinated me, expecially since my mom looked Greek.
If anyone has any info, I'd appreciate it. Or, if you know of other people named Lapides, I'd like to get in touch with them.
among the "sefardi jews " in greece, and before you have ( had) romaniots ( greek jews) they spoke yevanik ( judeo-greek ) and they settled in greece long long before the sfardim
