Professor Marc Shapiro on the Moroccan Rabbinate (Audio)

Professor Marc B. Shapiro (Author of the excellent biography of Rabbi Yechiel Weinberg, Between the Yeshiva world and Modern Orthodoxy ),delivered the 2nd annual Dr. Asher Siev Memorial Lecture at Yeshiva University, entitled "A Non-Orthodox Traditional Approach: Reflections on the Authority of the Moroccan Rabbinate." I think you commented on one of my history-related posts a little bit back. there are some ashki names that I have heard were originally sephardi, among them one of the "EpSTINE" lines of the Epstein family. Also that the name Shprinzy comes from Esperanza. random thoughts in my random moment...and thanks for the posts on the still-lost Tribes. I'd seen a review-article regarding Ethiopian jews and their formerly quite open use of Xtian liturgy, trope and practices (in the 'old country' they used to also practice female circumcision, and "cohen" and "levy" were *elected* positions...

    I am well aware of Epstein's claim of being descended of the Sephardic Benveniste faily. It is first (afaik) cited in R' Baruch Halevi Epstein's autobiography "Mekor Baruch".
